Legendary musician Pat Metheny brings Side Eye III+ to Manchester for an unforgettable night of music delivered by musicians of the highest order.

SIDE EYE III+

Fresh from releasing his latest album, Pat Metheny has put together a touring band that have some serious chops. The ‘three plus’ part of the title stems from the fact that the project began as a trio before more musicians were added. Recent and frequent collaborators, Joe Dyson (drums) and Chris Fishman (piano & keyboards), make up a couple of parts of the ensemble. Jermaine Paul has been brought in for bass duties, with Leonard Patton on percussion and vocals. Together, including Metheny, the quintet are fully equipped to deliver a set that showcases both old and new music from the Metheny repertoire.

Naturally, there are several cuts from the 2026 release however the band make their mark from the off, marching through the crowd to the sound of drums. With the stage blacked out, Metheny appears front and centre under an intense white spotlight. In On It gets things moving before heading back to 1976 and Bright Size Life. Those who have followed Metheny for years are immediately familiar with the opening strains of the song. Another new one, Don’t Look Down also wows, especially in this configuration of the ensemble. Another of the new pieces is Urban & Western. It stands out for its heavily soulful feel with a real sense of gospel and blues also running through the DNA of the song.

BETTER DAYS AHEAD

Shifting configurations of the band occur throughout the show. A trio, a duo and the aforementioned quintet are used as and when they are needed. Whoever is ‘in play’ with Metheny, completely mesmerises. Chris Fishman’s work on keys is particularly astounding, picking up bass parts when in a trio with Joe Dyson. To have the command over melody and rhythm, side by side, is nothing short of magical.

Pat Metheny is obviously the focal point with his intricate and crisp playing earning rapturous ovation after rapturous ovation. Dyson’s playing feels effortless as he grooves along with the band. Watching his array of symbols constantly swaying shows the command he has of his kit. None of his set up is for show, with every facet used. Every great drummer feeds a great bassist, and Jermaine Paul fits the bill. He moves between standard bass and upright bass showing off his ability to move up and down the neck of his respected instrument, perfectly.

Mas Alla (Beyond) is a mid set highlight. Metheny straps on one of his acoustic guitars in sweet serenade. The way he plucks the strings and creates the sound is glorious. When Leonard Patton joins on vocals and percussion, the effect is hypnotic. It is one of the only songs to feature a lead vocal line. Patton takes the plaudits for his beautiful vocal as the band swell around the Metheny & Patton.

CONTINUOUS ADULATION

Throughout the night, there is a seemingly continuous adulation. Each solo part is applauded enthusiastically by the sold out crowd. Each band member gets many moments to shine, and shine they do.

Things amp up a little when older material appears like an old friend. Phase Dance, The First Circle and a spellbinding Song For Bilbao are all hits. This quintet elevate the songs. By Metheny’s own admission from stage, the current touring group and their skills and qualities allow him to revisit material and showcase it for audiences. There is a clear joy that emanates from the band. Under Metheny’s sizeable hair. you can see his smile beam, and the rest of the band follow suite.

Many encores follow after Zenith Blue closes out the main set. America The Beautiful/The People United Will Never Be Defeated is a newer acoustic single and Are You Going With Me? is another crowd pleaser. Whilst there are minimal vocals during the show, there is a clear narrative of defiance and love throughout the music. Sometimes you don’t need words to convey that, you just need a deep sense of feeling and concentration. A PSA to leave your phones in pockets helps ensure that the capacity crowd are locked in. It is this connection that helps breed such an amazing atmosphere and reverence for the music. It’s a truly special night of music that shows just how great Pat Metheny is.
