enigma…
We were last aware of Scottish songwriter, storyteller and performer Norman Lamont when his epic single, Millers Lake, came to our attention earlier this year. Back then, we were captivated by Norman’s enigmatic lyricism in a song that evoked spirits as diverse as Paul Simon, Eno and The Incredible String Band.
Enigma is clearly a quality that Norman holds very dear – he’s proud to describe himself as: “A timeless singer-songwriter with a taste for surrealism,” but – hey – it’s Christmas (or it soon will be…) and even the most surreal and enigmatic amongst us can be excused for letting our hair down a bit, once the tree goes up and the fairy lights are switched on. And that’s exactly what Norman Lamont does with his new single, Christmas Revolution.
take a little trip back…
Christmas Revolution takes us, unashamedly, on a trip back to the early 70s, to the days of Slade, Wizzard and – particularly in this case – Mud. The drums clatter, sleigh bells chime and the saxophones honk. The pace is relentless, the saxophone solo is glorious and the call-and-repeat vocals have a simple message: It’s party time, folks. Norman’s vocal style may be closer to Elvis Costello than to Roy Wood but, nevertheless, the joy is unrestrained.
When asked what he’d most like for Christmas this year, Norman replied “A revolution of kindness would really make my Christmas” and, in amongst the Christmas jumpers, the party hats and the Santa costumes, there’s a serious tone to Norman’s lyrics that you’ll never have heard from Noddy H, as he sings “Even if you got no time for Jesus, you can still look beyond yourself.”
It’s good to lose our inhibitions occasionally and, with Christmas Revolution, Norman Lamont leads the way in doing just that.
