GETTING TO KNOW THEM
We’re getting to know Santa Barbara singer-songwriter Wryn quite well. Just a few weeks ago, we had a close listen to Snake, the (then) latest of a string of singles issued to preview their forthcoming album, Shapes (scheduled for release on 28th March – watch this space…) First single out of the traps had been Steady, a song written during (and inspired by the challenges of) the 2020 pandemic. With Snake, Wryn focused their attention and anger upon social and political upheavals happening around the world, specifically reactions to the Black Lives Matter movement , anti-trans legislation and the overturning of Roe v Wade.
This time around, Wryn are in a calmer mood and they’ve got some good advice for us all – but, first, a recap…
A SEISMIC SHIFT
Four years ago, the world of Wryn underwent a seismic shift. That world rocked, tumbled and turned itself inside-out as they looked inward, reassessed the traumas that theyโd endured and began a new journey of self-discovery. That journey resulted in not just a name change but, more pointedly, in a revelational transformation to their relationship with gender. Wrynโs reinvention โ in sound and spirit โ became the ethos of the forthcoming album.
SLOW DOWN
In Wryn’s words, Slow Down is a song about: “…noticing those bursts of joy in the middle of everyday chaos – it’s about slowing down, being present and recognising that those moments are fleeting – which is exactly what makes them so meaningful.”
To someone like me – and you, no doubt – who has spent far too much time racing around tending to the spurious needs that have been thrust upon us, that’s sound advice indeed and it’s advice that Wryn convey in the sweetest, most wistful vocal tones to the backing of some wonderfully bucolic acoustic guitar. Wryn remind us that the world will continue turning, whether we rush around madly or we don’t – and there’s so much around us to savour, if we take the time to find it.
Slow Down is a delightfully relaxing song with a delightfully relaxing message. Great video, too!
