Amelia Coburn – YES, Manchester: Live Review

Amelia Coburn heads out on a headline tour in support of Between The Moon & The Milkman; her brilliant 2024 album.

2025

2025 has already been very eventful for At The Barrier favourite, Amelia Coburn. There have been support slots for Levellers and a trip Stateside for SXSW Festival. Throw into that mix a couple of new videos and a 2024 full of praise for Between The Moon & The Milkman, and you’ve got an artist that is firmly on the rise.

Flanked by her band, Amelia Coburn delivers songs with an inimitable charm. Her local north east dialect creeps into her singing voice; it is refreshing to hear a voice so pure.

BETWEEN THE MOON & THE MILKMAN

Amelia Coburn has been on our radar for quite a while now. Between The Moon & The Milkman was one of our favourites of 2024. Eight out of the ten songs get an airing in Manchester. Well, seven and a half, save for the French language version of Sandra.

Whilst not having an explicit title track per se, See Saw is where the title comes from. Upon release, this beguiling song was accompanied by a brilliantly quirky and gothic video. This gothic like nature is something that Amelia Coburn revels in. Literary signposts like Edgar Allan Poe and Daphne du Maurier aren’t too far away.

Coburn’s darker side continues to flow through new songs like The Metamorphosis (inspired by the Franz Kafka book of the same name) and Wine To You Funeral. The latter is a song recounting the old notion of ‘Vinegar Valentines;’ where people would send cards with insulting messages rather than that of love. Another tick in the column of darkness, is the comfort Amelia Coburn says she gets in The Wicker Man (not the Nic Cage one!). This Body’s Yours To Keep is another new song that will hopefully find its way onto Amelia’s next record.

UNDENIABLE RAPPORT

Throughout the evening, Coburn’s rapport with the crowd is undeniable. The between song patter is top notch, and only adds to the pervading happiness in the room. Some of it is self deprecating and some of it is sheer wit from bouncing off the crowd.

A tale of how Nodding Dog is inspired by forays into the online dating world are met soundly with laughter. A particular punter enthusiastically ‘woops’ throughout. Apparently, he ‘hadn’t been paid!’ It is the kind of atmosphere that you live for at live concerts; especially ones like this in such an intimate environment.

‘Can you all keep in time?’ asks Amelia Coburn before Oh Captain! Guide Me Home. ‘Can we fuck!’ comes the retort. Again, the laughter in the room is jovial and the crowd clap along for the duration of the song before Perfect Storm closes out the evening in rollicking fashion.
