ANTICIPATION & ASSURANCE
Following on from their phenomenal debut album I Wonder If The World Knows? and a hit run of shows at venues across the country over the past year, The K’s latest release of Pretty On The Internet has been one of the most anticipated albums of the year for indie music lovers. Plus, a recent string of successful singles and intimate album shows this summer has increased the hype for the album even further.
Whether you’ve been following The K’s for the last few years and calling them out as the next big thing, or have recently discovered the band and are looking to get into them more – Pretty On The Internet does not disappoint in catering something for their whole audience, that is guaranteed to be enjoyed. In 12 songs, it’s obvious the band certainly knows what works for them, Pretty On The Internet presents the band as more confident and assured in the sound that has made them so popular, but with a matured twist.
ANTHEMIC INDIE ENERGY
Opening the album with the classic, catchy riffs that are so popular in Before I Hit The Floor as Jamie Boyle’s vocals provide that anthemic, indie energy is a perfect move – as the listener is immediately captivated. The high energy, upbeat direction the band are taking here is instantly recognised, and works so well. There is no doubt the fans will already be thinking about the bouncing and mosh pits that will happen when the album’s played live.
This energy and grit is definitely a common theme throughout the album, with tracks Rat Poison and Gravestone providing those electrifying guitar riffs and contagious hooks the band are so famous for.
And to further this, already released singles The Bends (Here We Go Again) and Me And Your Sister have to be highlighted as some of the most infectious songs on the album and have already affirmed themselves as fan favourites. They are ones you just keep coming back and listening to, a trait that seems common in many of The K’s hit songs. This is most likely due to the relatability and realism Jamie portrays in his autobiographical lyrics across the album.
VULNERABILITY AND EMOTION
As well as bringing the northern energy throughout, there is also a more vulnerable and heartwarming side to the album that portrays the band’s maturity and emotional strength. With the single Helen, Oh I bringing incredible vocals and emotive string arrangements to reflect a personal side they often feature, with fan favourite Hoping Maybe off the last album being reminiscent here.
There is a further reflection of this in later track 33 Heads. There is a sense of vulnerability as Jamie showcases his vocal versatility on a more intimate track, but still portraying the classic sound of guitar riffs and melodies The K’s are so famous for as the song builds. One of the strongest tracks on the album for sure. This is further exemplified the album’s closing ballad, Perfect Haunting, as Jamie pours out emotion and feelings into a final 4 minutes.
“Won’t you put on my songs and dance with my ghost?”
“Even as a ghost to you, you still mean the most to me”
Making the choice to end the album on such emotion and vulnerability shows the maturity of the band’s sound, and how they have so much potential not only in the mosh pits, but can also pull at the heart strings and truly resonate with the listener.
ELEVATING SOUNDS AND POTENTIAL
Pretty On The Internet provides fans with 12 tracks featuring everything they’re so popular for, whilst still elevating their sound to progress the band further. There is so much potential in the Earlestown Quartet and all allegations of any possibility of just being an “indie landfill” band can definitely be denied now, as their musical talent is showcased in all its prime. I can’t wait to see what comes next for the band.
