A MYSTICAL BRAND OF JAZZ-FOLK
You may be more familiar with Katie Boeck in her guise as an actor – she shared the lead role of Wendla in the 2016 Tony-nominated Broadway revival of rock musical Spring Awakening. But, if you haven’t yet heard her mystical brand of jazz-folk that channels the combined spirits of David Crosby and – especially – Joni Mitchell, then you’re missing a trick. Back in April 2023, Katie released her debut full-length album, Calico – an album that garnered a good deal of praise for the quality of its songs and for the emotion in Katie’s vocals. Now, she’s back – and new single, Dust, sets new standards in pure ethereality.
Dust is described as: “…a song about spiritual timing, when one soul is ready for something real and the other is still chasing fleeting pleasures.” Katie’s gently strummed guitar is joined by the soft, subtle drums of Joe Westerlund/ Shane Leonard and the soothing bass of Pat Keen – and Paul Brandt adds keyboard tones that complete the ethereal picture.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED…
But, more than anything else, Dust is a showcase for Katie’s songwriting and vocal delivery. The song’s structure and Katie’s vocal mannerisms would convince the most committed Joni-phile that he or she is hearing a long-lost Joni Mitchell song and, by that, I don’t mean to say that Dust is a deliberate, blind, copy of Joni’s style. More that Katie’s natural charm comes from the same mould as Joni’s. And, when she sings the song’s payoff line: “…but you won’t see, no, you won’t see me through the dust,” the warmth she generates could melt and iceberg.
The song’s accompanying video, produced with the help of Bella Mazzola of Twin Lantern Productions, doubles the impact of the emotions expressed in Katie’s music. “We wanted to reflect on that longing with something simple yet ethereal, a visual echo of the song’s emotional space,” says Katie. “Vulnerable and yearning, but also beautiful and sacred.”
Mission accomplished, I’d say…
