A WEAVE OF SOULFUL MAGIC

It isn’t very long ago at all since Prince Edward Island singer-songwriter Logan Richard last appeared within these pages. Indeed, it was just back in June when we effused over Logan’s most recent album, Character Traits. Well – it seems that Logan Richard is something of a workaholic, because he’s here again – this time with a live-in-the-studio tribute to the great Bill Withers. And his interpretation of Withers’ song, Kissing My Love, is accomplished, respectful and highly enjoyable.

For this outing, Logan is accompanied by Joshua Van Tassel on drums, Afie Jurvanen on bass and Chris Kirby on keyboards. these are guys who know exactly what they’re doing and they mesh together tightly as they weave their soulful magic. As Logan says: “I am so happy that we finally decided to get this band together to jam a few songs and record them. I am stoked with what we got; everyone played so musically and tastefully and it has me excited to play these songs live.”

FLUENT, ENGAGING AND NOT OVER-COOKED

Kissin g My Love is driven along by Afie’s solid, funky bassline and Joshua’s deft, tight, drum rhythm. Logan’s vocals are clear, soulful and passionate and his guitar solo is pitched just right: fluent and engaging, but not over-cooked. It’s a fine version of a fine song.

And Kissing My Love is the only bang that you get for this particular buck. the track is accompanied by a live take on If You’re Gonna Change Your Mind, a soulful, funky highlight of the Character Traits album. What’s not to like?
