Energetic trad trio Granny’s Attic set off on second leg of album launch tour.

UNCONVENTIONAL DANCE MOVES

Granny’s Attic have been a staple of the folk festival and club circuit for over a decade now with their combination of traditional ballads and self-penned dance tunes, washed down with a lively stage banter and some unconventional dance moves.

The threesome – fiddle player Lewis Wood, guitarist George Sansome and melodeon/concertina maestro Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne – have an easy rapport with the audience, even as they gently rib the typical folkie stereotypes. Granny’s Attic may be traditional, they are not necessarily conventional!

Cold Blows the Wind

They returned to Bristol for the second time this year to continue the tour promoting their most recent album, Cold Blows The Wind, and the majority of the songs and tunes they played featured on that record. Since it has been out since May, and the majority of the tracks are traditional anyway, the audience was already very familiar with the music, so there was no “oh no, not more new stuff“, just appreciation of the band.

Highlights are a great take on Lovely Joan, and a touching The Mermaid, but it’s the sets of tunes where the sheer energy of the band comes to the fore. These can be traditional Morris or Lewis’ own compositions but the joy and jumping are indefatigable.

Old Favourites

A handful of old favourites – Wheels Of The World and Away To The Southard – nod to the band’s now extensive back catalogue, but this show is about introducing the newer tunes to the set, and is none the worse for that.

Granny’s Attic continue their tour through November across England – check the website for details.
