VICTIM OF A CASUAL THING
Victim Of A Casual Thing is the highly-anticipated debut album from Birmingham-based four-piece: The Clause. Their previous EP, Weekend Millionaire reached #6 in the Official Independent Album Breakers Chart and established The Clause as one of the UK’s most exciting up-and-coming bands. Since then, Pearce, Niall, Liam and Jonny have spent the past few years on the road on their tours and supporting the likes of The K’s, Lottery Winners and DMAs.
The band welcome us to the album with Prologue. However, it doesn’t open as you’d expect. It opens with an atmospheric blend of ambient sounds, distant chattering and the hustle and bustle of busy streets, gradually building anticipation for what’s to come, and of course the next track…
Released back in May- Nothing’s As It Seems has already had an incredible crowd reaction when performed live at festivals this Summer. The song creates the perfect blend between the instrumentals and Pearce’s powerful vocals.
A NEW CHAPTER
Victim Of A Casual Thing marks a defining milestone in The Clause’s discography, a sharp and confident debut album, promising an exciting career ahead. The album creates a balance between upbeat tracks and more vulnerable moments, showcasing the band’s versatility and talent. Every track on the album feels carefully chosen, reflecting the thought and dedication poured into its creation. The attention to detail shines through, making it clear how much effort went into moulding the record’s sound and story.
Element was originally released under the title In My Element, when the band were signed to Universal’s record label. The band unfortunately lost the record deal during covid and therefore lost rights to the song. For Victim Of A Casual Thing, the band thought they would re-record the track and make it theirs again. Pearce said: “For the album, we thought we’d go and re-record it and take it back and make it ours again, so we could put it on the record, so it’s a bit of an act of defiance that one.” The track has been given a new life and energy.
‘I’m coming up
I feel a rush of blood
I’m in my element
In my element.’
INFECTIOUS ENERGY
The tune Elisha stands out as a fan-favourite and the album would be incomplete without this song. The track is the epitome of an indie-rock anthem, flowing with infectious energy.
Pearce highlights Exception as one of the album’s key moments: “Exception is a song right in the middle of the album. It’s kind of a blend of a lot of different music tastes that we have, and it’s probably one of our most vulnerable songs, so I’m looking forward to people hearing that one.”
The Clause keep the energy flowing in the final track Don’t Blink. It’s a powerful finale that encapsulates what the band and album stand for- reflection, ambition and emotion. It feels nostalgic and overall projects as a perfect closure for Victim Of A Casual Thing. The track is reflective, yet still incorporates heavy instrumentals.
The Clause are celebrating the release of their album and are heading off on their headline UK tour in November, culminating in a hometown show at O2 Academy Birmingham. You can view their tour dates here.
