DEFIANCE IN THE FACE OF GRIEF

With The Boatman, Romsey (Hampshire) – based singer-songwriter Lucy Kitchen gives us our first preview of her forthcoming album, In the Low Light.  The album will be Lucy’s third – the follow-up to her 2027 offering, Sun to My Moon – and it’s scheduled for release in February 2026.  Watch this space…

Speaking of The Boatman, Lucy says: “With this single, I wanted to write what felt like an old folk song.  I’m not sure if I achieved that but I like how it’s a grief song but also feels slightly defiant in the face of death.  I’s released an acoustic version of this on my Stabal Sessions EP but I really wanted to record a full-band version and go big with it.”

ANTHEMIC PROPORTIONS

And, “going big” is precisely what Lucy has managed to do with The Boatman, and she’s managed to do so without losing any of the song’s fragile intimacy.  All is gentle to begin with, as Lucy accompanies herself on lightly-strummed guitar.  But the signs are there as swirls of organ and splashes of electric guitar join the mix, before the full band kick in and transform Lucy’s ‘old folk song’ into something that assumes anthemic proportions, but always with Lucy’s sweet, intimate vocals at front and centre.

Written in the wake of Lucy’s husband’s death in October 2022, The Boatman explores the themes of loss, grief, memory and transformation.  Yet, within its sorrow, there are glimpses of joy, gratitude and rediscovery.  For Lucy, the act of creating became a lifeline; a way to process pain, honour love and slowly reassemble herself through music.  In the Low Light promises to be quite an album – keep an eye on these pages for further news and for our review.
