Eugene McGuinness – London: Single Review

London is the second new single of the year from Eugene McGuiness. It is a beautiful lament to the city he calls home.

EUGENE MCGUINNESS

Eugeneย McGuinnessย is an inventive songwriter and performer, known for his wry, nimble lyricism and blending retro influences with contemporary sounds to create his unique brand of off-kilter pop.

Londonย is where McGuinness was born and currently resides, but one heโ€™d never really call โ€˜homeโ€™ – despite his deep affection for the city. Born to Irish parents, his complex relationship with London is considered in this lyrically personal – yet universal – exploration.ย

LONDON I LOVE YOU

London is a beautiful lament to the nations capital city. Set against mournful cellos and a cantering pulse, McGuinnessโ€™ vocal sits on top, wrought with emotion. It evokes similarities with Paul Heaton and Coles Corner era Richard Hawley, but with less vocal rasp. Vocal harmonies move around the music wonderfully. They help create a brilliant song that clocks in at less than two and a half minutes. London is a pint sized success of a tune.ย

You and I go back a long time
We braved the rain and bathed in sunshine
But you walk all over me sometimes

Recorded atย Liverpoolโ€™s Docklands Speed Shopย with friend and producerย Gajo Paco, its tasteful additions of cello, slide guitar and wurlitzer were also added to the mix there.
