We’ve been waiting – oh so patiently – for this! It was back in April when the news broke that Barbara, our favourite purveyors of sophisticated fop-pop announced that they’d be undertaking a headlining tour at the back end of 2024. Well – doesn’t time fly! Here we are in November and Barbara are on the blocks and ready to go. The tour started on Saturday 2nd November with a hometown show at Hove’s Brunswick. The guys will back at the same venue on Friday 8th November before heading out into less-familiar waters on a 10-date jaunt around the compass – from Scotland to the New Forest, up and over The Pennines, and from the provinces to the capital.
a momentous year
2024 has been a momentous year for Barbara. They kicked off the new year in style with a Brighton Bonanza – Barbara’s first appearance in their home town for six months, on a double-header of a bill that also featured local heroes, the Brighton Beach Boys. That show, at the small-but-perfectly-formed Latest Music Bar in Brighton’s Kemp Town took place just as the news was breaking that Barbara would be the opening act for Paul Weller on his spring tour with The Modfather launching his 66 album. We tagged along, of course and we were delighted to see our friends convert a host of new Barbarettes to their cause as they turned in a blistering set at Blackburn’s King George’s Hall.
It’s not just in the live forum that Barbara have been active either. The March single, Mein Frรคulein was followed, in June by the release of Barbara’s second 6-track EP (we prefer to call it a mini-album…) – the excellent Happy Days! – and, just a month later, by the band’s most recent single, Property-Owning Democracy. We’ve often remarked that Barbara seem to get better with every song they record and that’s an observation that has only made us look forward to this tour ever more keenly.
Tickets
There can be little doubt that Barbara’s recent high-profile appearances – with Mr Weller and also supporting Haircut 100 on that band’s October 2023 tour – have stirred up an awful lot of interest. so much so, that John, Henry and the chaps have felt compelled to add a few more shows – in Barnoldswick, Edinburgh and Hartlepool to their original tour itinerary. And, if you are thinking of popping along to a show (and we strongly recommend that you do…) then our advice is: Get your tickets now; they’re selling like hot cakes. At The Barrier will be at the Barnoldswick gig on Friday 15th November (look out for our match report) and tickets for all shows can be purchased from AGMP.co.uk or by telephone from 0871 220 0260.
