MANY DIRECTIONS
If you ever having a burning desire to get something off your chest then music is an ideal vehicle. Walter Trout shoots in many directions on this album not only lyrically but with his booming, raucous guitar licks.
Right from the start he fires his bullets with Artificial bemoaning the falsities in everyday life today; “I wanted to reflect upon what’s going on in the world. For me, writing these songs is therapy. They’re not just about what’s happening out there, but how it affects you in your head. Sign Of The Times just became the obvious title…”
Walter live, and on record, has a reputation for no nonsense exhilarating rocky blues yet his mellow compassionate side is also shining through on the intimate Mona Lisa Smile. Speaking of his partner Marie he says, “That song is about when I see her vulnerability, or her moments of self-doubt and sadness.” Mandolin, accordion and violin enhance the mellow vibes.

SIGN OF THE TIMES
Trout touches on many deep, important issues and consequently his music replicates his strong feelings with many of the lyrics coming from Marie and the energising music from his regular recording team of drummer Michael Leasure, bassist John Avila and Teddy ‘Zig Zag’ Andreadis on keyboards.
Life’s roller coaster of emotions and experiences is well represented on Sign Of The Times will resonate with most listeners but as many often say when turmoil presents itself, ‘Music never lets you down!’ and its therapeutic qualities come through on this album, especially on No Strings Attached, a typical example of his scorching, volatile guitar work.
Again some respite comes with I Remember. It’s country feel recalls when life promised a more positive future. Something in the present global climate we all crave and seem to find through concerts and festivals. Hurt No More reflects on times when dark moments resulted in self harm, he really opens up honestly on deciding on how responsibilities to those around him made him consider a more positive outcome.
High tech Woman reveals a bouncy Chicago blues style sound; it romps along cheerfully and provides another lighter moment. Too Bad resorts to a traditional smoky acoustic delta blues showing there isn’t a facet of blues that Walter can not play before concluding with the piercing Struggle To Believe at full blast.
This uncompromising album will satisfy your rocky instincts but will also, if you look deep into the lyrics, give you lots of food for thought.
